What the Universal Commerce Protocol Means for Shopify Stores
At the National Retail Federation show on January 11, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard for AI agents to discover products and complete purchases with merchants. Shopify co-developed it with Google. Below, we cover what UCP is, what it changes for Shopify stores, and what needs no action from you.

Key Points
- UCP is an open standard for AI agents to connect and transact with merchants, announced on January 11.
- Google built it with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. More than 20 other companies endorse it.
- It starts with native checkout, with a buy button coming to AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app.
- Merchants publish the capabilities they support, and agents negotiate what they can handle.
- The retailer stays the merchant of record, and most Shopify stores don't need to build anything.
What Google and Shopify Announced
In his NRF remarks, Sundar Pichai said Google is introducing UCP for the era of agentic commerce, when AI agents help shoppers go from discovery to purchase. He described it as open, endorsed by more than 20 others, and built together with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. Google's developer blog lists endorsers including Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Mastercard, Stripe, The Home Depot, and Visa.
Google is starting with native checkout. Pichai said shoppers will soon see a buy button directly on Google surfaces, including AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, with payment through Google Pay. He also said the retailer remains the merchant of record.
Pichai gave an example. A shopper searching for a suitcase from Monos could be offered a new member price or loyalty sign-up on the spot. A returning customer could see offers based on past purchases, or a suggestion such as packing cubes at checkout. In other words, the protocol is meant to carry the merchant's own offers into the AI conversation.
How UCP Works in Plain Terms
Shopify's engineering team explains that commerce is complicated: payment rules, discount stacking, and fulfilment options vary by store. UCP handles this by letting each merchant declare what it supports. Agents read that profile, work out what they can handle, and complete the transaction.
The protocol is built in layers. A core shopping service covers the basics of a checkout, such as line items and totals. Capabilities cover larger areas, such as checkout, orders, and catalog. Extensions add specific features, such as fulfilment options, discounts, or a loyalty program. Merchants publish their profile at a standard address on their site, and when an agent can't handle something the merchant needs, the buyer completes that step themselves.
How It Fits With Other Standards
Google says UCP works with existing protocols, including Agent2Agent, the Agent Payments Protocol, and the Model Context Protocol. It also separates the payment method a shopper uses from the payment processor, so it can work with many existing providers.
This matters because there is now more than one way for AI tools to buy from stores. OpenAI's Instant Checkout, launched last fall, runs on a different protocol. Shopify has said it wants merchants to be ready whichever approach wins, and its work on both is how it plans to do that.
What It Changes for Shopify Stores
For most Shopify merchants, UCP is plumbing. Shopify co-developed it, so Shopify carries most of the work of supporting it. You don't need to publish a profile or write code to benefit.
What you do control is the information agents work with. Pichai said Google's Shopping Graph has more than 50 billion product listings, with more than 2 billion refreshed every hour. Accurate prices, stock, variants, and offers in your feed and on your product pages are what an agent will use. Shopify's engineering post notes that discounts and loyalty programs can be passed through as extensions, so keep those set up cleanly in Shopify.
No Rush, but Check Your Feed
No urgent action is needed. Check that your Google Merchant Center feed is healthy, your product data is complete, and your discounts are set up in Shopify rather than in workarounds. Then watch for Shopify announcements about selling through Google's AI surfaces.
