Setting Up GST, HST, PST, and QST With Shopify Tax in Canada
Shopify Tax has expanded to Canada. It calculates GST, HST, PST, QST, and RST based on the customer's province, uses product categories to apply exemptions and zero rates, and tracks where you may need to register. If you've been managing tax with manual overrides, this is a real improvement. Below, we cover how to set it up and what to check before you rely on it.

Key Points
- Shopify Tax calculates GST, HST, PST, QST, and RST by the customer's province and shows each rate to buyers.
- Product categories drive exemptions, such as provincial exemptions for some children's clothing.
- Tax on shipping now follows the rate on each item, which helps with zero-rated and mixed orders.
- Liability insights now track possible obligations by province and territory.
- Product categories must be accurate, and existing tax overrides take precedence, so review both.
What Shopify Tax Adds in Canada
Shopify's changelog describes three main changes. First, calculations: Shopify Tax works out the right rates based on the customer's province and shows each one separately to the buyer. Second, smart categorization: Shopify suggests a product category and applies the right rate under Canadian rules, for example where children's clothing and footwear qualify for a provincial exemption. Tax on shipping now follows the rate of each item, so zero-rated goods and orders with mixed rates are taxed correctly.
Third, liability insights now work at the province and territory level as well as for Canada as a whole. Shopify compares your sales with government requirements and tells you where you may need to register and collect. Shopify says it's rolling out to stores that sell in and to Canada, with existing stores notified by email.
Why Product Categories Now Matter
Shopify Tax uses product categories to decide which products are exempt or zero-rated, such as groceries. Shopify's Help Center is clear that verifying those categories is your responsibility, including the ones Shopify suggests. A wrong category can mean collecting too much or too little tax.
Products created by CSV upload or by an app may not have suggested categories at all. Before you switch, filter your products for missing or doubtful categories and fix them, individually, in bulk, or by CSV. If you're unsure how a product should be classified, Shopify recommends asking a tax expert, and we agree.
Review Your Tax Overrides
Many Canadian stores have tax overrides set up for exemptions that Shopify's basic tax settings didn't handle. Under Shopify Tax, an override still takes precedence over the calculated rate. Because categories may now handle the same case, some overrides may no longer be needed.
Shopify's suggested approach is careful: record the details of an override before deleting it, remove one at a time, and place a test order to confirm the result. Shopify also notes that orders containing a product or shipping override aren't calculated by Shopify Tax, so leftover overrides reduce the benefit of switching.
Where Shopify Tax Doesn't Apply
Shopify's Help Center lists cases where Shopify Tax calculations aren't used for Canadian orders.
- Orders shipped to a country other than Canada.
- Orders created by third-party apps or the API, such as Buy Button, Facebook, or Amazon orders.
- Orders that contain a product or shipping rate with a tax override.
Checks to Run Before Your Next Filing
After switching, place test orders to a few provinces, such as British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta, with a mix of taxable and exempt products and shipping. Confirm each tax line on the order and receipt. Check that your registrations are entered in Settings > Taxes and duties, since some overrides only apply when the matching account number is added. Then run the Canada sales tax report, available when your store currency is CAD, and compare it with your records for the period.
Check the current pricing for Shopify Tax in Canada in the Help Center before you switch, as fees can apply above a sales threshold.
Categories First, Then Overrides
Fix your product categories first, then record and review your overrides. Switch on Shopify Tax when it reaches your store, test orders across provinces, and have your accountant review the first month's sales tax report before you file.
