How to Turn Shopify's Scripts Report Into a Functions Migration Plan
Shopify Scripts are being retired, and on February 4 Shopify released a report that lists the Scripts on your store and suggests how to replace each one. It's the best starting point we've seen for scoping the move to Shopify Functions.

Key Points
- Shopify's deadline to migrate off Scripts is June 30, 2026.
- The new customizations report covers payment, shipping, and discount Scripts and recommends Functions-based apps or tutorials for each.
- Functions run as part of apps, are configured in the admin, and run in under 5 milliseconds.
- Not every Script needs replacing. Use the report to decide what to keep, rebuild, or retire.
- Test each replacement before you turn the old Script off.
Why Scripts Are Going Away
Shopify Scripts let Plus merchants write Ruby code to change discounts, shipping rates, and payment methods at checkout. Shopify is replacing them with Shopify Functions, which do similar jobs but are packaged as apps and configured in the admin. Shopify's stated deadline to migrate off Scripts is June 30, 2026.
That sounds far away, but Scripts often hold years of pricing rules, shipping logic, and promotions. Replacing them takes planning, and it's better done outside the holiday season.
What the Customizations Report Shows
Shopify describes the report as a personalized page in your admin, with Shopify Functions documentation or app links to help you recreate each customization. It lives in the admin under Apps, then Script Editor. Click Replace Shopify Scripts in the banner to open it. Depending on what you run, it has sections for payment gateways, shipping, and product discounts.
For each customization it shows the name, a description, and links to the source file, along with recommended apps built on Shopify Functions and links to the relevant Functions tutorials. You can export the report as a CSV, which makes it easy to share with your team or your developer.
Turning the Report Into a Plan
We treat the report as an inventory. Export it, then sort every Script into one of three groups.
- Retire a Script that supports an old promotion or rule you no longer use. Shopify notes you don't need to recreate it.
- Replace a Script with an app when a recommended app built on Functions covers the logic. Check its pricing, its limits, and whether it handles your edge cases.
- Rebuild a Script when the logic is specific to your business, such as tiered B2B pricing or carrier rules for certain postcodes. That logic needs a custom Functions app.
- For each item, note who owns it, how it will be tested, and which month it will move.
Testing Before the Switch
Shopify's guidance is to deactivate a Script only after you've tested its replacement. In practice, that means running real scenarios through checkout. Try a discount that should stack and one that should not, a shipping rate for a remote address, and a payment method that should be hidden for some orders.
Write the expected result down first, then test against it. Include B2B customers, draft orders, and any market with its own currency if those apply to your store, because Scripts often carry special cases that nobody remembers until they break.
Plan the cutover for a quiet week, and keep a short rollback note in case something behaves differently in production. Tell your customer service team what changed, so they can spot a problem quickly if a customer reports an odd price or missing shipping rate.
What You Gain With Functions
Shopify says Functions run on WebAssembly and execute in under 5 milliseconds, so they hold up during flash sales. Developers can code and test locally, and the same app can be installed across several stores, so the code lives in one place. Merchants can change settings in the admin without touching code. For brands with more than one store, such as separate Canadian and US stores, that last point alone can save time.
Start With the Export
Open the report this week and export it. Sort each Script into retire, replace, or rebuild. Then put a rough month next to each one. Aim to finish well before the 2025 holiday season, so your peak period runs on the new setup with a full year of margin before the deadline.
