Shopify POS Adds Local Delivery, Multi-Store Pickup, and Wired Hardware
Shopify POS has picked up three practical features this year. Staff can now create local delivery orders at the counter, send pickups to any of your stores, and connect card readers and printers over wired USB with POS Hub. For brands opening their first store, or their fifth, this is what these changes mean and how we'd set them up.

Key Points
- Staff can create local delivery orders in POS using the delivery zones and rates set up for your online store.
- Multi-location pickup lets staff send a pickup order to any pickup-enabled store, with live inventory.
- Both need POS Pro, and local delivery needs POS version 11.16 or later.
- POS Hub connects card readers, printers, scanners, and cash drawers over USB instead of Bluetooth.
- Review staff permissions before launch, since local delivery changes which roles can fulfill orders.
Local Delivery From the Counter
When a customer can't carry an item home, staff can now arrange delivery in the same sale. Shopify's changelog says local delivery in POS uses the delivery zones and rates you already set up for your online store. When the customer's address falls in one of your zones, local delivery appears with your other shipping rates. Staff select it, confirm the customer's phone number, add delivery instructions, and check out. The order is then prepared and fulfilled like any other local delivery order.
There are a few rules. Every physical item in the order must be delivered, so you can't mix local delivery with shipping or pickup in one order, although gift cards and digital items can be included. Delivery must be in the same country as the location. It requires POS Pro and POS version 11.16 or later.
Check Staff Permissions First
Local delivery changes how some permissions work. To create local delivery orders, staff need the Create shipping and delivery orders permission, previously called Ship to customer. To fulfill them, staff now need Fulfill shipping, pickup, and delivery orders. Before this change, staff could fulfill local delivery orders without it. Review your roles before you start, or staff who fulfilled these orders last week may find they can't this week.
Pickup at Any of Your Stores
Since June, staff can create pickup orders for collection at any of your pickup-enabled locations, right from the POS cart. They switch store with one tap and see live inventory for each location, so they choose one that can actually fill the order. It needs POS Pro, POS version 11.8 or later, and two or more pickup-enabled locations in the same country.
For a brand with two or three stores, this turns an out-of-stock moment into a sale. The customer pays now and collects from the store that has the item.
POS Hub and Wired Hardware
POS Hub became generally available in March. It's a small countertop device that connects an iPad or Android tablet to card readers, receipt printers, barcode scanners, and cash drawers over wired USB, rather than Bluetooth. Shopify's pitch is simple: peripherals stop dropping mid-shift. Built-in software monitors connected devices and shows their status and alerts in POS. For busy counters, that reliability is worth more than any new feature.
What an Omnichannel Setup Looks Like
Put together, this is the setup we'd aim for with a growing retailer:
- One product catalogue and one inventory view across online and every store.
- Local delivery zones that match the area each store can serve.
- Pickup turned on at every store that can hold orders, so staff can route sales between them.
- Shop app listings for your stores, which Spring '26 added along with local inventory on product pages and returns finished at your counter.
- POS v11 across all devices, which keeps the cart on screen through the whole sale.
- Wired hardware at your busiest counters.
Before the Holiday Season
Before the holiday season, update every device to the latest POS version, review staff roles for the new permissions, and test a local delivery order and a cross-store pickup in each location. If Bluetooth drops have caused problems at busy times, trial POS Hub at your busiest counter first.
