What Matters in Shopify's Fall '26 Edition Four Weeks Before BFCM
Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition, titled Exponential, on October 28 with more than 150 updates. The theme is the Shopify network: signals from millions of merchants feeding fraud prevention, customer recognition, and AI discovery. It lands four weeks before Black Friday, so the useful question is what's safe to turn on now and what should wait until January.

Key Points
- Shopify Protect brings fraud and chargeback tools together in the admin for stores on Shopify Payments.
- Seven new local payment methods include Alipay, WeChat Pay, OXXO, and GrabPay.
- A new knowledge base lets you review and publish the facts AI agents get about your store.
- Sidekick is rebuilt to run calculations, write code, and remember what you teach it, with your approval.
- Canvas is in early access, and some checkout and Protect features are still rolling out.
Network Features Worth Turning On Now
Shopify Protect brings Shopify's risk and dispute tools into one place in the admin. Shopify says signals from millions of businesses inform its defences, so a card flagged at one store is already known at the next. It also says Shopify Payments blocks more than 12,000 high-risk payments every minute. Kubix Media's roundup notes that much of Protect works without setup for stores on Shopify Payments, while the Rule Builder for writing and testing your own fraud rules is still rolling out.
Shopify Payments also adds seven local payment methods: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay, and GrabPay. All work in online checkout, and most also work with Shop Pay, the Shop app, and Shopify POS. If you sell into the markets these serve, they're low-risk additions before the holidays.
Getting Found by AI Agents
Two admin updates matter for AI discovery. A new view shows whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog, which ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta, and other agents use. It also links to fixes for anything in the way. And the knowledge base, under Sales channels > Agentic, lets you review and publish the facts agents receive about your store, such as return windows, shipping destinations, and gift services. Shopify drafts the facts from your storefront, but nothing reaches an agent until you approve it.
This is the most useful thing to do before BFCM. It takes little time, and it means agents answer shopper questions with your actual holiday policies.
Sidekick and the New Admin
Sidekick has been rebuilt to run calculations, write code, search the web, and remember what you teach it, while you approve its changes. The admin is also getting a new look, with a collapsible side navigation and Sidekick as a floating chat on every page. Kubix notes the redesign is rolling out gradually.
Both are useful, but neither is something to adopt in a hurry in November. Bulk changes across products, even with approval, deserve a careful review, and a new admin layout is easier to learn in a quiet month.
What to Leave Until January
These are worth planning for, but not worth changing before peak season:
- Canvas, the visual store editor powered by Sidekick, which is in early access.
- Rollouts that combine theme, checkout, catalogs, and discounts in one launch, unless you've already tested them.
- Checkout layout changes and new custom fields that are still rolling out.
- The Shopify Protect Rule Builder, until it's available and you can test rules against past orders.
- Any theme rebuild for Canvas's new architecture.
Changes on the Shopper Side
Some of the biggest updates are ones you don't switch on. Shop.md lets shoppers give an AI agent like ChatGPT or Claude a shopping skill that searches more than a billion products and checks out with Shop Pay. Shop Pay now works inside personal AI agents, starting with Muse from Meta. Universal Checkout in the Shop app lets shoppers buy from several merchants in one checkout. Each one is another place your products can sell, provided your data and policies are in order.
This Week, Then Freeze
This week, check your Catalog eligibility, publish your knowledge base facts with holiday shipping and returns, and review the Shopify Protect view if you use Shopify Payments. Add relevant local payment methods. Then freeze everything else until after Cyber Monday and book a January review of Canvas, Rollouts, and the new checkout features.
