How Shopify Agentic Storefronts Put Your Products in AI Chats
One of the headline launches in Shopify's Winter '26 Edition was Agentic Storefronts: one setup in your admin to make your products discoverable in AI chats like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Seven weeks on, we look at how it works, what you control, and the product data that decides whether you show up.

Key Points
- Agentic Storefronts syndicate your products to AI platforms through Shopify Catalog from one admin setup.
- You can toggle each AI platform on or off and see orders with AI channel attribution in your admin.
- You stay the merchant of record and choose whether shoppers buy in the chat or on your store.
- Product attributes, metafields, and a knowledge base for policies shape how agents present you.
- Shopify says other AI channels are coming soon, so set up your data now and revisit as they launch.
What Agentic Storefronts Are
Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts on December 10. The idea is simple: rather than integrating with each AI platform yourself, you set up once in the Shopify admin and Shopify Catalog makes your products available across AI chats. Shopify named ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot, with other channels coming soon.
Shopify Catalog does the heavy lifting. Shopify says it uses signals from millions of merchants and products to infer categories, extract attributes, combine variants, and group identical items. It also keeps prices and inventory current across agents.
What You Control
Shopify is clear that merchants keep control. You can toggle each AI platform on or off to choose where you sell. You remain the merchant of record and own the customer relationship and the post-purchase experience. You choose whether customers complete purchases in the chat or on your online store, and every order flows into your admin.
That last point matters for Canadian merchants who have spent time on checkout customizations, shipping rules, and duties. Shopify says it will help you understand how your checkout will appear on these surfaces, so review that before you switch a platform on.
Attribution and Reporting
Orders from AI channels show in your admin with AI channel attribution, so you can see which platform drove a sale. Shopify also says you get insight into search trends and the topics customers are asking about, which shows how you appear in AI conversations.
Set a baseline now. Note your current AI referral traffic and orders, then track them monthly. With a new channel, the trend over a few months is more useful than any single week.
Use the search and topic insights as research, too. If shoppers keep asking AI platforms about sizing, materials, or delivery times for your products, that's a sign those answers should be clearer on your product pages and in your policies.
The Product Data That Decides Whether You Show Up
Shopify says you define your schema and group products by standard attributes and metafields so agents present them accurately. In practice, that means work in your catalogue.
- Assign the right Shopify product category to every product.
- Fill in category attributes such as colour, size, and material, rather than leaving them only in descriptions.
- Use metafields for details shoppers ask about, such as fit, ingredients, or compatibility.
- Keep variant names, prices, and stock accurate.
- Add your return policy, shipping timelines, and FAQs to the Knowledge Base App so agents can answer questions about your store.
Data Quality Becomes the Difference Between Stores
Agentic Storefronts lowers the cost of showing up in AI channels to almost nothing for a Shopify store. That means the difference between stores will come down to data quality. Two stores selling similar products won't be shown equally if one has complete attributes and clear policies and the other has a title and a photo.
It also fits the wider picture. Google and Shopify announced the Universal Commerce Protocol this month, and Shopify has said it wants merchants ready for whichever AI channels shoppers choose. Clean product data works for all of them.
Audit Before You Switch On
Open the agentic settings in your admin and review which platforms are available to you. Before you turn any on, audit your top products for categories, attributes, and metafields. Then set up the Knowledge Base App with your policies. Then track attributed orders monthly.
