Key Points
- Shopify merchants can sell to ChatGPT users through Agentic Storefronts, with products discoverable by default.
- Shoppers check out in an in-app browser on your store's checkout, or in a new tab on desktop.
- Shopify says there are no transaction fees beyond standard payment processing.
- Orders show ChatGPT referral attribution, and you remain the merchant of record.
- The new Agentic plan lets brands not on Shopify list products in Shopify Catalog.
What Went Live
Shopify says that starting the week of March 24, millions of merchants can sell to ChatGPT users through Agentic Storefronts. Shoppers find products from across Shopify through Shopify Catalog, then complete the purchase in an in-app browser. On desktop, ChatGPT links out to the merchant's store in a separate tab.
Because the purchase happens on your own checkout, your brand, pricing logic, payment methods, and checkout customizations carry over. Products are discoverable in ChatGPT by default, with no separate integration or app, and Shopify says there are no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates.
Attribution and Control
Orders arrive in your admin with ChatGPT referral attribution, so you can see which sales came from ChatGPT. You remain the merchant of record and keep the customer relationship and data. You can manage ChatGPT access in the agentic sales channel settings in your admin, so you can remove ChatGPT if it doesn't suit your business.
ChatGPT is one of several AI channels in Agentic Storefronts. Shopify says thousands of merchants are already selling in Microsoft Copilot, with Shop Pay coming there soon. Select brands are selling in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app through the Universal Commerce Protocol, and Shopify says UCP will soon power checkout in some Meta experiences.
What to Set Up First
Since your products are discoverable by default, the work is making sure they show up well. Shopify's Help Center for selling on ChatGPT lists requirements. Among them, your store must sell to customers in the United States, and your terms of service, privacy policy, and refund policy must be completed in your admin. Check those first.
- Complete your store policies in Settings > Policies.
- Review the products eligible for Shopify Catalog, and the categories and attributes behind them.
- Make product titles and descriptions specific, with key details in text near the top.
- Add shipping, returns, and FAQs to your knowledge base so agents can answer questions.
- Set up a report for ChatGPT-attributed orders so you can track the channel monthly.
The Agentic Plan for Brands Not on Shopify
Shopify also made its Agentic plan publicly available worldwide. It lets brands that don't use Shopify for their online store add products to Shopify Catalog and sell across AI channels and the Shop app, without migrating. Shopify's Help Center describes it as suited to businesses on legacy or custom platforms and to those that want to build a Shopify store before moving to a paid plan.
For brands on another platform, we see this as a low-risk first step. It gets products into AI channels now and gives the team hands-on time with the Shopify admin and Shopify Catalog. If AI sales grow, the case for a full migration becomes easier to judge with real numbers.
Being Listed by Default Still Takes Good Data
Being in ChatGPT by default is a big shift. Being there by default doesn't mean you're presented well. The stores that win in AI channels will be the ones with complete product data and clear policies. That has been our advice since AI traffic started growing last year, and it still holds.
Check Your Settings
Open the agentic sales channel settings in your admin and confirm ChatGPT is set the way you want. Complete your store policies, review your top products for complete attributes, and start tracking ChatGPT-attributed orders. If you're on another platform, look at the Agentic plan as a way to test AI channels before you decide on a migration.
