Does Your Shopify Store Need an llms.txt File?
Since Answer.AI proposed llms.txt last September, the file has become a common item on SEO checklists. Before you ask a developer to add one to your Shopify store, it helps to know what it does, and what Google has said about it.

Key Points
- llms.txt is a proposal from Answer.AI, published September 3, 2024, for a markdown file that points language models to a site's key content.
- Blocking or controlling AI crawlers is still the job of robots.txt.
- Google's John Mueller said that, as far as he knows, no AI service has said it uses llms.txt, and compared it to the keywords meta tag.
- Crawlable pages, clear text, and accurate structured data matter more for Shopify stores today.
What llms.txt Is
Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed llms.txt on September 3, 2024. The idea is a plain markdown file at the root of a website, at /llms.txt. It gives a short background on the site and links to the content a language model would find most useful. The proposal also suggests offering clean markdown versions of pages at the same URL with .md added.
The reasoning is practical. Language models work better with concise information, and a full website includes navigation, ads, and scripts that get in the way. Site owners know which pages matter most, so the proposal lets them list those pages in one place. The examples in the proposal are mostly software documentation, where developers often feed library docs into AI coding tools.
What It's Not
llms.txt is often described as a robots.txt for AI. Search Engine Journal points out that this is wrong. robots.txt tells bots what they may crawl. llms.txt doesn't block anything. It only offers a curated list of content. If you want to control which AI crawlers can access your store, robots.txt is still the tool for that.
It's also still only a proposal. None of the major AI companies had announced support for it at the time of Search Engine Journal's April 2025 report.
What Google Said
In a Reddit discussion reported by Search Engine Journal, a site owner asked whether anyone had seen AI bots reading their llms.txt file. One commenter who hosts around 20,000 domains said no AI agents were downloading the files, apart from a few niche bots. Google's John Mueller replied that, as far as he knew, none of the AI services had said they were using llms.txt, and that server logs showed they weren't even checking for it.
Mueller compared the file to the keywords meta tag: a site owner's claim about what the site is about, which a system would need to check against the actual site anyway. Search Engine Journal adds the risk that a site could show one thing in llms.txt and another to users, which is why systems are unlikely to trust it on its own.
What This Means for Shopify Stores
Adding an llms.txt file is low effort, and it does no harm. But it shouldn't take time away from the work that affects whether AI tools and search engines understand your store today.
- Check that your robots.txt isn't blocking collections, products, or content you want found.
- Keep real text on the page. Product details, sizing, materials, and shipping information should be in HTML text that loads with the page, even when images also show them.
- Make sure product, price, availability, and review markup is valid structured data that matches the visible page.
- Link collections and key pages from navigation and from related products.
- Publish a useful About page and policies. AI tools and shoppers both look for who you are and how you handle shipping and returns.
If You Want to Add One Anyway
Some brands add llms.txt as an inexpensive experiment, and that's reasonable. Keep it short and honest. Describe the business in a few lines, link to your main collections, best sellers, shipping and returns policies, and your About page. Make sure every link goes to a real, indexable page with the same information. Then check your server or CDN logs over a few months to see whether anything requests it.
Fix the Basics First
Run a quick crawl of your store and check three things: that key pages aren't blocked, that product pages carry their important details as text, and that structured data passes Google's Rich Results Test. Fix those first. If you still want an llms.txt file afterward, it takes an hour.
