- Merchants pay a fee on completed purchases. OpenAI says product results are organic and not sponsored.
- Product data quality, availability, and price will shape which products ChatGPT shows.
What OpenAI Launched
OpenAI says more than 700 million people use ChatGPT each week, and many already ask it for product advice. Instant Checkout is its first step toward letting them buy too. US users on the Free, Plus, and Pro plans can now buy directly from US Etsy sellers inside a chat. OpenAI says over a million Shopify merchants, including brands such as Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori, are coming soon.
For now it supports single-item purchases. OpenAI says multi-item carts and more merchants and regions come next. When a product supports Instant Checkout, the shopper taps Buy, confirms shipping and payment, and completes the order in the chat.
How It Works for Merchants
Instant Checkout is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard OpenAI developed with Stripe. When a shopper places an order, ChatGPT passes the details to the merchant's systems. The merchant accepts or declines the order, processes payment through its existing provider, and handles fulfilment and support as usual. Stripe describes it as a way for businesses to build once and sell through any compatible AI agent.
Shopify's announcement adds the details that matter for its merchants. The store name is shown clearly, and orders flow into the Shopify admin with proper attribution and clear fees. Merchants remain the merchant of record, own the customer relationship, and control whether shoppers use Instant Checkout or go to their online store.
Ranking and Fees
OpenAI says product results in ChatGPT are organic and unsponsored, ranked on relevance to the user. Instant Checkout items aren't given preference in results. When several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT considers availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled.
Merchants pay a fee on completed purchases. OpenAI describes it as small and says it doesn't change prices for shoppers. Neither OpenAI nor Shopify published the rate in their announcements, so check the terms when the option reaches your admin.
What to Prepare Now
Shopify says it supplies real-time data on pricing, inventory, images, and variants so products can be found in a format AI understands. That means the quality of your product data in Shopify is what ChatGPT will see.
- Product titles that describe the item clearly, without internal codes or vague names.
- Complete descriptions with materials, sizes, compatibility, and use cases, the details people ask about in a chat.
- Accurate inventory, so products that are out of stock aren't offered.
- Correct variant data, with clear option names for size, colour, and style.
- Clear shipping and returns policies, since the shopper may never visit your site before buying.
- Good images for every variant.
Questions to Ask Before You Turn It On
When Instant Checkout becomes available for your store, decide how it fits. Which products should be available, and are there any you'd rather sell only through your site? How will these orders show in your reports and attribution? How will your customer service team recognize and handle them? Shopify says you can choose whether shoppers check out in ChatGPT or on your store, so make that choice deliberately.
Review Your Top 50 Products
Pick your top 50 products and review their titles, descriptions, variants, and images as if the data were all a shopper could see. Fix the gaps. Then watch your Shopify admin for the ChatGPT option and read the fee terms before you enable it.
